Intel 845 Freezing issue with Ubuntu 8.10

People with Intel 845 motherboards and onboard video drivers may face a issue if they login into system on Ubuntu 8.10. Also people running live CD may not able to actually run Ubuntu 8.10 as it will freeze in live CD mode. So people who wants to install Ubuntu 8.10 on Intel 845 must select the "install Ubuntu" option when booted from live CD instead of "Try and Install Ubuntu" option.
Once Ubuntu is installed on boot try to login if your login freezes then press reset button and wait again for login screen. At login screen select the "Fail safe Terminal" from session section from your lower left corner and login. Now type "gconf-editor" and once the editor is launched select the "desktop->gnome->application->window_manager" now from right side of window edit the values for current and default by removing "/usr/bin/compiz" with "/usr/bin/metacity" and then reboot.
Now from login screen again select the GNome session instead of "Fail Safe Terminal" and now login with your username and password.

As usual, Ubuntu is broken and they don't have enough developers to fix problems either. My company briefly tried it and went back to using RHEL 5 + EPEL repository. Works great.

Yes thats a good idea of going back to RHEL5. The only problem is RHEL is antique piece, it cannot be compared with Ubuntu. Ubuntu is up-to-date OS. If you need a better and stable OS switch back to Debian instead of RHEL.

Also note the Display issue is not limited to Ubuntu, any distro that is using latest X will face the same issue. Cause now X tries to detect the Monitor and Display drivers own its own. You are using antique distro so you may not even understand and know what is going on in the development world. You will never understand the fun of using cutting edge technologies.

Thanks man, due a failure on my main computer I was forced to use a machine with an "all in wonder" mother board with intel "810/845" video card.

The good thing about this is that I had to use other distros and found the amazing PCLinux OS(long, long time ago since i didn't do this)

I will try your solution.

Hello TusharG
I am facing the "black screen" problem while booting from live CD and i have Intel D845 mobo.
Since, your solution says to install it first, will i lose everything on my hard-drive while installing ?
I have Windows XP too. I don't want to lose it while installing Ubuntu 8.10. I want to dual boot.

So, will i get a choice if i select Install Ubuntu 8.10 from Live CD to keep my partition ?

Thanks Tushar. Your blog saved me a day.

I've got 2 identical PCs with 845G Intel Motherboard. On one Ubuntu 9.10 is working without any problem after I replaced Intel drivers with v 2.4 (else 9.10 used to hang arbitrarily 10-20 times a day). But on the other PC I could not install Ubuntu 9.10 normally. I had to install it in Safe mode. But after that it would just not detect the monitor. I tried all types of suggestions including moving over to Intel 2.4 drivers. I even tried creating Monitor section with my monitor (Philips 17" 107E5) parameters in \etc\X11\xorg.conf but it never worked. Monitor would work in 640x480 resolution. Automatic settings is problematic when things go wrong.

I don't like 9.10's automatic features. So, I decided to shift to 8.10. Thanks for your help.
