First let me start with some of my bad practices... :)
I hate when too many apps run in background and hog my phone memory... I have bad habit of factory resting my phone when I am too board!
What are the apps that I cannot leave without?
1. Opera Mini ( Browse like 3G on GPRS connection! )
2. Docs (google docs)
3. Solitaire
4. eBay
5. KeePassDroid - Same password file on phone and on computer ( install KeePass on comp)
6. Waze
7. Comodo ( Block spam SMS/Calls even when number is not displayed ) ( Soon I will be posting list of these numbers/site names)
8. LinkedIn
9. SMSBackup+
One of the good thing is I have moved all my contacts to google contacts now I'm not worried about loosing any contact and every time I store new contact I directly store on google.
Here is a quick tip, I am sure lot of people must be already aware of the same but it amazed me that my phone still has surprises for me and there are still lot of areas to explore! Search any contact and swap your finger from left to right and it will call its default number! swap finger from right to left and it will open SMS app!
NOTE: Following section involves risk for bricking your phone. You are following these instructions on your own. I'm not responsible if your phone is bricked or any kind of phone damage.
What you need to download before you flash a Custom ROM and root your phone?
Here is a list: (You can google these files and download them)
1. Odin Multi Downloader v4.xx.exe ( Important program that will help you write the files to phone)
2. Cooper_v1.0.ops
3. cwm-recovery-ace.tar.md5 (To install Custom boot)
4. upd_1.zip ( To root your phone)
I will recommend before you flash any Custom ROM on the phone you download your Factory image for your ACE phone from samfire.com website. Because some or other day you may wish to go back to original factory image. The Samsung Galaxy ACE is a very popular phone and because of that it has many many custom ROM's. If you google for it you will find many sites hosting the links to the custom roms. XDA-Developers is one of my favorite.
To name some of the ROM's that I have tried and liked are:
1. FirstUA ROM (No bugs were observed.)
2. Infinity ROM (Volume remains on maximum when running a radio app)
3. ICSStock V2 (Superb ICS simulation but my bluetooth device has problem )
I have tried 11 Custom ROM's and above 3 mentioned one are the one I liked most. There is also a ROM that simulates exact look of Windows Phone 7, and one with exact Touch Wiz 4 look, One with Sony Ericsson look and one with Miui look.
9-March-2012: Just upgraded my Stock ROM 2.3.4 to 2.3.6

Abhinav
@Abhinav: Did you try various settings in Settings -> Call settings?
Hi Tushar,
From which source/Website dif you download FirstUA Custom ROm ?? I want to install this ROM and want to know the details. Is your phone working fine now? Do you face any probs with it? Pls help me outt....
Hi Tushar, First of all Congratulations on your achivement on this blog...
I am happy with my phone, no issues... just felt like leaving Good regards to you...
@Mahesh: YOu can get FirstUA ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184108
My phone is working fine infact it ROCKS!
Make sure you first install Root your phone, then install CWM, then flash the FirstUA 1.0 ROM and upgrade it to 1.1 followed by 1.2
there are no shortcuts.
@Imtiaz Ali: Thanks a lot for supportive words. All credit to people like you, who has giving me support and feedback that helped me keep this post alive and updated.
Tushar,
Great to hear from you that the phone works without any bugs with this ROM. I understand everything except "Make sure you first install Root your phone.... "
What do you mean by 'Install Root' that??
Should i Install something else than CWM and ROM?? Please Clarify. :)
Is if fine if do step by step given on the xda-developers thread link??
@Mahesh: Sorry my bad. It was a typo. I wanted to say root your phone first and then install CWM. Then install the desired ROM. Yes! following the steps mentioned on the xda forum will be the best option.
Hi Tushar...I tried everything...but it just didnt work :(
@Abhinav: Let me check it tomorrow and get back to you. Usually when one phone is going on and if you receive another one you simply needs to accept the call which should put the first one on hold. Anyway let me check it tomorrow and get back to you.
Hats of Tushar, ur blog really useful to any Android phone users.
i am using HTC Salsa(rooted)
For all, please take care while rooting.
forum.xda-developers.com is the best site for rooting instructions.
happy rooting to all.
Hi Tushar,I know I'm far from you guys but still I have a problem in my Ace from last 2-3 days.My android version is 2.3.4 from Dec'11.As I'm a student I have to put my ace on silent in college hours and when I comes back to home I switch it on Normal mode after about 8-9 hours. But from last 2-3 days when I switch to Normal Mode the Ringer Volume gets low by little more than half automatically and I didn't get to heard the ringtone when I get a call.I've to increase the Ringer Volume always,I tried rebooting it many times. It doesn't giving a problem on instant silent and normal mode. Please Help Me.:(
@Kshitij Matey: Hi, Honestly I do not have solution to your problem however I can suggest you to upgrade your phone version to 2.3.6 via Kies or over the air via samsung login in phone. 2.3.6 has many bug fixes and if you are lucky your bug will be also addressed.
Hey Tushar Thanks for your advice. Sorry but I didn't get what you say "over the air via samsung login in phone". Can you please tell me whats this means in brief. Thanks again.
@Kshitij Matey: Goto Settings->About Phone->Software Update and when you create and login into account if the update is available you can upgrade firmware over the Wifi or 3G. I'll advice to do it on faster connection as it will take lot of time and make sure you have 100% battery charged.
Hi Tushar,
Can you explain how to root the phone and install custom ROM?.. Xda is too big to search for and too tough to understand..
Waiting for your steps reply.. will flash after that
hi tushar,
Did you flash to firstUA without installing coderom? caus the baseband required is KPH right??
@Anantha: I first rooted my phone, then i installed CWM and then I installed FirstUA ROM. However now I do not recommend FirstUA Rom as android 2.3.6 and 2.3.7 version based custom Roms are available. FirstUA is based on 2.3.4
@tushar,
FirstUA requires your Baseband version to be KPH*** but in india we have DDQ* i guess.
Also forgot to update, I installed CWM5 galaxyacefix and then flashed CM7.2. Great ROM very fast even though the RAM usage is more, there is no lag...
Any other ROM u wanna suggest? caus i wanna try them
P.S I dint root my phone.
Also FirstUA developer has stopped working for it, so its more or less dead now
Hi Tushar,
If i connect my phone to PC (winXP), my SD card is not detecting. I have to install kies on every system i am connecting the phone.. Is there any method to transfer data to SD card directly without Kies & Sd card reader..
Thanks
Regards,
Duraiarasan
@Anantha: Yes FirstUA development has stopped long ago. Most of the ROM's out there are either based on Cyanogenmod or from stock source. My observation is Cyanogenmod do consume more battery than stock but are more customizable. I'm currently on Cali v1.0 ROM which is based on Cyanogenmod. The bigger problem of most of the custom ROM's is that they are not tested and are solely dependent on people's feedback. I have observed bluetooth issues/lack of features in almost every custom Rom I have checked.
Can you upload the files for FirstUA rom and Coderom.. Caus its not available in the sites...
How about trying MIUI rom?
hello sir
first thanks for this nice blog
i want know how to set sd card password. there is no option in the setting of my ace. i dont want encrypt some files from my sd card, i want set a password for full protection of my memory card like my older nokia phone. if i insert this memory card to another phone or card reader first it should ask for password. i dont know how to set memory card password from our galaxy ace. plss could you help mee .. thanks in adwance
Should one install Juice Defender App?
@swaroopa: If you wish to... I feel it is really not required if you know how to configure and put the best configuration by hand. Ex: Put display to minimum, display timeout to 15 sec, disable bluetooth when not in use, disable wifi when not in use, have apps bare minimum which will run in background and will consume battery.
@Anantha: MIUI for galaxy ACE is still in beta state and is very very buggy. I will suggest any cyanogenmod based ROM will be good. However I strongly feel that everyone needs to find their own custom ROM's which will fit their requirement. On XDA forum you will also find Cyanogenmod 9 based ROM which is in its beta 8 and is ICS based.
@Anonymous: By default there is no password protection option in ACE for SD card. However you can find many apps that can encrypt certain folders which can be password protected.
How can we undetstand which apps will run in background and will consume battery before installing them?
My friend had installed JD in her ace in it helped her to save battery but in the log of JD it showed AOSP helper not installed JD will try force installing it... Fingers crossed etc...
What is that? She became afraid and uninstalled JD!!!
My phone's battery drains fast when I use net otherwise it is fine...
I have set brightness to its least, Bluetooth, Internet is always off I manually on it from settings whenever required...
Dont use WIFI and GPS so it is always off...
Suggest some good battery saver app if any
(I have not flashed custom ROM... As I have no knowledge of it...)
heloo tushar thnks for ths blog
im worrying about my battery
when i dont use mobile the battery temprature is around 35 to 40 degree celcius.
but when i charg it with its original samsung charger its heat too much and temrpeture would be around 50 degree celcius. downloading also encreas my battery temprature.
i want to know what should be the right temprature for my galaxy ace and how i make it cool when it heats.
thanks in adwance @ Arshad
@Arshad: Battery temperature may rise when you are using phone and charging. However check if any active services are running in background that are causing heavy usage. Remember majority of the time issues are caused by applications. Lastly I will say try charging mobile by completely switching off and observe the temperature.
@swaroopa:
1. Remove any task killer you have.
2. You don't need any JD, you are already taking care of functions that are required to save battery.
3. Some applications runs in background all the time watch out if they are consuming too much CPU and that can drain your battery.
4. Typical battery life of ACE is One day don't expect any more than that. I have seen my ACE battery lasting for 30 hrs max and on an average around 20-22 hrs with moderate usage of Whatsapp, GPRS, Wifi, calls, bluetooth.
Sir,
How to activate mobile tracker options in Ace??? Recently my dad became culprit of mobile robbery and unfortunately he had not activated mobile tracker so couldnt find the phone... Now I want to be safeguarded so please guide me in activating Mobile Tracker or is it that we need to install any app if yes which app???
@swaroopa: The best app I have seen is Avast for android which when properly configured can track phone and also gives complete control of phone. Remeber but only when properly configured.
Sir,
I installed Avast now what to do? How to configure it properly please guide...
Avast is an anti- virus software too so now U should uninstall Lookout na??? I had already installed Lookout as Anti virus software after reading your blog
@swaroopa: Yes, you can now safely remove Lookout. Guiding for Avast is beyond my scope! However it is pretty simply if you follow onscreen instructions. Do activate Anti-Theft feature and configure it.
Sir,
Thanks a lot for reply...
Sir,
While activating Anti- Theft in Avast I came across sekecting an Installation mode, Easy Installation Mode & Advance Installation Mode which mode we should select??? Please guide me for the same...
Sir I am very sorry I am asking too many questions but really I dont have any knowledge of it and I am very much concerned about my phone that nothing should happen to it so...
May the festival of lights,
bring a world of sparkling joy, happiness and contentment to you n your family...
